🕰️ What Happens to a Handpan Over Time?
We live in a world where the handpan is still a rare instrument — though not as rare as it was 7, 10, or 15 years ago. The market has grown, the number of makers has increased, and access to instruments has become easier.
But with this expansion, certain commercial habits from other industries have also been adopted — some of which are not always compatible with the spirit of the handpan.
💸 Is Buying a Second-Hand Handpan Worth It?
A common myth in new instrument markets is that anything used automatically loses value.
But when it comes to the value of a handpan over time, the reality is different:
A well-maintained handpan not only keeps its value — it may even increase.
🌍 A Story About a Legendary Handpan
Around 8 years ago, I had the chance to temporarily own a handpan made by SPB in Russia — one of the first makers of this instrument. In fact, SPB helped introduce the very term “pantam”.
That instrument was unique: rugged, with visible hammer marks, yet the sound felt poured, not struck. It had started its journey in the U.S., and eventually made its way to me in Bucharest after passing through many hands.
At that time, this handpan was worth around €10,000 — but people had the courage to lend it to others, relying on trust and human connection.
It was a mature handpan. And it sounded exceptional.
🧘 Why a Handpan Is Not Just an Object
As the market has grown, some of its subtlety has been lost:
A second-hand handpan isn’t just “used” — it’s seasoned, matured, and has a clearer voice.
The value of a handpan over time lies in this process of maturation.Much like an old violin, a well-cared-for handpan gains depth and character.
The metal itself "works", adapts, and opens up. It gets used to vibration, to your hands, to your emotions.
✨ What Happens to a New Handpan?
When you receive a brand-new handpan, its sound needs time to settle.
In the first two months, it starts to gain sonic roundness.
After six months, the instrument already feels different.
And after a year… it becomes a part of you.
Its vibrations begin to mirror your style, your emotion, and your connection.
🤝 In the Spirit of Community
Inspired by that legendary handpan, I decided to continue the tradition:
Two instruments crafted by us are currently traveling through the handpan community in Romania.
They reach the people who need them. They create connections. They touch souls — just as I was once touched by the sound of a borrowed handpan.
🧡 Conclusion: A Handpan Is Not Just an Object. It’s a Presence.
Maybe we can’t stop the transformation of the market. But we can keep its spirit alive.
A second-hand handpan is not something “less.”It is a formed instrument, with a voice already shaped.
If you have one, take care of it —Because it also takes care of you.
